How can I obtain accessible copies of core texts?

Answer

If you require accessible formats of core reading materials due to a disability or specific learning difference, Liverpool Hope University provides several support pathways.

Learning Support

Learning Support can arrange support for disabled students including those with dyslexia, sensory impairments, or other access needs through Learning Support Plans (LSPs).

Contact Learning Support to discuss your specific requirements. They can arrange alternative format materials including:

  • Large print versions
  • Audio formats
  • Digital text files compatible with screen readers
  • Braille (where available)

Phone number: 0151 291 3427

Email: studentlife@hope.ac.uk

Or visit the Learning Support Office on the 1st floor of the Gateway Building at the Hope Park Campus.

RNIB Bookshare

The RNIB Bookshare Scheme provides a collection of accessible books for students with print disabilities. If you're registered with Learning Support, they can facilitate access to this service.

Information on searching for books on Bookshare is avaiable in this Bookshare guide.

If you need any support with using the website, please contact askalibrarian@hope.ac.uk.

Advance Planning

To ensure timely provision of accessible materials:

  • Contact us as soon as you receive your module reading lists
  • Allow 2-3 weeks for format conversion where standard alternatives aren't immediately available
  • Speak to your module tutor if you need additional support identifying core texts

For urgent requests or further assistance, please contact Learning Support directly or speak with a member of the Library team who can signpost you to the appropriate support.

Accessible Study Suites

The university provides two Accessible Study Suites, one on each campus. At Hope Park, the Accessible Study Suite sits in the Sheppard Worlock Library and is located on the ground floor near Special Collections. You will need your ID card to enter this space. The suite is equipped with PCs loaded with JAWS, Inspirations, Read & Write, ZoomText, Dragon, and Kurzweil. There is also a CCTV available in this suite to enlarge text. The Accessible Study Suite has a power-assist door and height-adjustable desks. The Accessible Study Suite at Creative Campus is located in room CAP210 of the Capstone Building.

Students with an LSP can book these specialist spaces up to one week in advance by emailing learningsupport@hope.ac.uk or askalibrarian@hope.ac.uk.

Accessible Private Study Rooms

Private Study Room 004 on the ground floor of the Sheppard Worlock Library is loaded with JAWS, Inspirations, Read & Write, ZoomText, Dragon, and Kurzweil. There is a large screen monitor, scanner, and CCTV available in this room. This room can be booked at the Library Help Point.

Private Study Room 105 on the first floor of the Sheppard Worlock Library is loaded with Inspirations, ZoomText, Dragon, Read & Write, and Kurzweil. This room can also be booked at the Library Help Point. The library lift can be used to reach the first floor.

Private Study Spaces 005 and 006 on the ground floor of the library are loaded with Inspirations, Kurzweil and Read & Write. These rooms are available on the online booking system.

Library Support

Staff in the library can help source accessible versions of core texts that are already available. You can search for accessible copies in OneSearch. For example, existing e-book versions often support text-to-speech and adjustable font sizes.

Contact the Library team: askalibrarian@hope.ac.uk or visit the Help Desk in any library location.
