What is the difference between Green and Gold Open Access?

Answer

Green Open Access is where you self-archive a version of your research output in a subject or institutional repository, for example Hope's Institutional Research Archive (HIRA). This will often be the author accepted manuscript version, also known as the post-print and there may be an embargo period before the full text is visible.

Gold Open Access means publishing your research output in a journal (either hybrid or fully open access journal) where the final, published version is freely available to anybody, immediately upon publication. This normally requires payment of an Article Processing Charge (APC) or membership of a transformative (Read and Publish) agreement.
